Bensoir! It's me, Benjamin. I like to eat and drink. And cook. And write.

You may have read stuff I've written elsewhere, but here on my own blog as Ben Viveur I'm liberated from the editorial shackles of others, so pretty much anything goes.

BV is about enjoying real food and drink in the real world. I showcase recipes that taste awesome, but which can be created by mere mortals without the need for tons of specialist equipment and a doctorate in food science. And as a critic I tend to review relaxed establishments that you might visit on a whim without having to sell your first-born, rather than hugely expensive restaurants and style bars in the middle of nowhere with a velvet rope barrier, a stringent dress code and a six-month waiting list!

There's plenty of robust opinion, commentary on the world of food and drink, and lots of swearing, so look away now if you're easily offended. Otherwise, tuck your bib in, fill your glass and turbo-charge your tastebuds. We're going for a ride... Ben Appetit!

Coming soon... BV London Pub of the Year 2012-2013

Oi, Landlords!

You have just a couple of weeks left to impress me if you want to become the second Ben Viveur London Pub of the Year.

11 days actually.

Actually less than that, because I'll be in Russia for three of those days. Or four if you count travelling time.

And you can deduct a few more days when I'll be fasting and not drinking any beer.

OK, basically you have about one day remaining to wow me into a creamy frenzy with the most amazing beer you can find.

Thirsty Work

Here's the deal: Last year's Top Five pubs will go up against five new contenders, in order to keep things fresh. (Pubs that finished outside the top five last year will be eligible for shortlisting again from next year).

Conducting some intensive research...
The survey period is the last six months of 2012 and the first six months of this year. Past glories will count for nothing. Nothing, I say!

The ten shortlisted pubs will all be assessed, rated and ranked during July, and sometime this Summer the white smoke will rise and a winner will emerge. I might even invest in a nice trophy and have the winner's name engraved thereupon.

Will Clerkenwell's Craft Beer Company hold on to the crown? Will the Harp or Southampton Arms knock them from their lofty perch? Could they even be deposed by a newcomer? Maybe even one of the other Craft Beer Cos that have opened in the past year?

All these questions and more will be answered soon. After I've had a few more pints to really make sure I get my decision-making right.

Meanwhile, I'm off to Moscow tomorrow for a few days. Toodle-Pip, Ben-Voyage and Diddly-Squat!
